I am a 3rd year student interested in doing an away in Chicago. I have heard good things about all the programs in Chicago both on this forum and on scutwork.com. Which programs would someone from Texas who is an average applicant (230 on Step 1, Top 20% of class) have the best chance to make a good impression on the rotation and thus increase the change of matching in Chicago? I know this is a subjective question, but I am open to anyone's opinions on this matter.

Think about rotating at Northwestern. They take 9 per year and usually 8 or all 9 are rotators. This past year they interviewed approximately 8 non-rotators out of about 50. Unfortunately, rotating at their program doesn't always mean that you'll have an interview (but that's true about anywhere where a program has a bunch of rotators).

Not to mention that NW this year took 5 of their 9 from in-house. Is that a common trend for them?

All of the programs will want you to rotate. It will be very tough as a Texan to "break into" the Chicago area. I was the only one from my class that got an interview at any of them and I interviewed at NW and UIC (did not rotate at either). You can read my thoughts on the programs in the rank order list thread.

You have an uphill battle. I would just pick one and go with it. NW and Rush are probably the most difficult to get into of the programs, but if you work hard, it can pay off in spades. Research the programs and find the one you fit with best.

I am a lifelong Texan and matched in Chicago without rotating here. It can be done, but it is not easy. You pretty much have to rotate at NW. Rush takes almost all midwest/east coast guys. UIC is more diverse. Loyola and UC take mostly midwest guys also. Send me a PM if you have specific questions.

No, Northwestern only takes its own if they are worth taking. Last year they took no one from home and in years past they generally take two, three as a stretch.
