Couple quick questions:
1. I have looked around on this site and found various things on Duke. Such as Duke is a “malignant” program (it is an ugly word and I did not think it true for any Ortho residencies), and it is Fellow heavy, you NEED to do a fellowship after your residency, second look is a turnoff, etc. And yes a variable of couple of good things from interviewers, but they seem far more scarce. Any recent thoughts about the program? Residents or med students wanting to dispute these rumors or should I take them as accurate opinions?
2. I have also looked around for UNC posts and they are more positive so the same questions not as much of a concern, but any additional info from residents, med students and interviewers would be much appreciated

Duke's Ortho program is not malignant at all. I can't speak for the rest of Duke, but from my interaction with the residents and faculty, I can't think of a stronger group among all of the places at which I interviewed/rotated. It starts with the program director, Dr. Hardaker, who is among the most engaging and enthusiastic people I've met. He lives and breathes Duke Orthopaedics and has done an unbelievable job making it a top-notch program. As for the fellows running the show, I'd have to disagree. The chief residents seem to run the place. It is a resident run program and there is enough faculty that there are plenty of great cases to go around.

I think very highly about UNC too. The chairman, Dr. Dirschl is a fantastic leader and very charismatic. Dr. Dahners is a great teacher and mentor and the residents are all very strong.

You can't go wrong either place.
