I am an alabama native and wondered if UAB is a good place to do an away rotation and if they give courtesy interviews to their rotaters? Thanks

I am a current resident at UAB.

Doing a rotation at UAB is a good idea. You get to rotate on the Trauma Service, Spine service, and one of your choice. We definitely give interviews to the rotators and look favorably on those who do.

UAB is a good place to train. Plenty of business.

In fact, we just expanded to 6 residents per year..

Kev, I am a new 4th year at UAB, PM if you have any specific questions. Orthodude pretty much summed it up. I think it is a very strong program (even though I haven't done any aways yet) and most of the guys get along really well.

They work hard and have plenty of cases in their training. The chief that I worked with last year was very well trained. If you choose to do an elective here, the fact that you are from Alabama will help.

Some UAB info:

We have expanded to 6 residents per year and have 6 new interns currently. All subsequent classes will have 6 residents.
Our division chair recently stepped down as chairman but has remained ont the faculty. He is dedicated to the rpogram and has no wishes to leave. There is an active search for a replacement and a current interim chair.
This is a stable program that has a high case load that the Review Board thought warranted two extra residents per year. We get great exposure in trauma (only level 1 center in state), spine, pediatrics, sports, tumor, and general ortho. We have a VA center as well as a county hospital.
The morale here is good. The residents are a close group that get along well with each other and the faculty. The program is certainly not malignant in any way.
I think US News gave it #34 in the country this year and one of the best in the south.
The great news is that the new hospital is opening this September with all new wards, Operating rooms, call rooms, and ER. It's going to be nice.

Please ask any questions you would like.
