Hello Ortho Hopefuls - I am a resident at Hawaii and wanted to inform you guys that this year we have only had 3 students come through and rotate! Our program secretary recently was dismissed and I have heard that people have had a difficult time scheduling student rotations. So if you are that stellar candidate that I was last year, looking to have a great rotation and land a spot somewhere, this may be your lucky year.

The Hawaii program is a small program of 11 guys that love to operate, hang out, and enjoy our days off. Our program strength is Sports Medicine and all graduates go onto a fellowship. We score very high on the OITE. We have one half day per week devoted to didactics and another half day devoted to a resident run clinic. The current roster of residents is very strong and tight - we have significant input into the resident selection and want to keep up the tradition by hand picking next year's class. So if you come here and hit it off with us, we will certainly try our best to lock up a spot for you.

The Queen's Hospital is the major trauma center for all of the Hawaiian Islands, so it is busy but the pathology ranges from general traumatology to interesting cases flown in from the outer islands and micronesia. The second year is 12 months of trauma Q3 call. The remaining years are a mix of Shriners Pediatric, Tripler Army Hospital, Hand, Spine, Sports, and Electives. The Chief year is half trauma, half electives.

Two positions are available each year, a 5 year spot, and a 6 year spot that has a year of research. There is a rumor that this program favors Hawaii residents and that one spot per year is given to someone with Hawaii connections. This is not true. We will take the best of the lot that wants to come here. Of our current residents, about half have a Hawaii connection and the other half do not.

If you are looking to hit the jackpot and match into Ortho and live in Hawaii for 5 years, this is the place. Please contact me and I can answer questions or help you set up a rotation.

Does the program have cut off scores for interviews and/or away rotations?
