I am a 3rd year student planning 4th year electives and was thinking about rotating here because I'd love to live in AZ... what do you all think of the program? Also, what other community programs in the Southwest should I consider rotating through?

Thank you

Is there still a program there to rotate through?

I've heard that there might not be a program soon, and that the residents are starting to leave to go elsewhere. I cannot confirm this, as it's just a rumor to me. Anyone have some more insight?

I've heard that the old chairman was fired and a bunch of faculty and a few residents left when that happened. I guess a new chairman is coming in and is supposed to have a good plan to bring them back. Apparently they are awaiting the results of their latest ACGME review (which should be out soon) to see if they will be closed or just on probation. Until they find out, they haven't officially sent out interview offers- as far as I know. They are supposedly planning to interview during early February if they don't get closed down. Has anyone heard anything else or gotten an interview offer yet?

Well, I think this was to expected:

Thank you for submitting your ERAS application to the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Program at Maricopa Integrated Health System in Phoenix, Arizona.

At the Annual ACGME Meeting it was decided to close the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Program and restructure the program effective June 30, 2005. As a result of that decision, will not be interviewing this year. We wish you luck with your future medical endeavors.

Sincerely,

Peter N. Giovan, M.D.

According to a resident who transferred out, as of noon Friday the 21st of Jan 2005 that program no longer exists. The RRC officially cruched it out of existance.

That's too bad. I feel sorry for all the guys that need to find new homes now. At least that's one less interview I'll have to go to. That means I'm done!! No more travelling, no more sleeping in airports and getting dressed in bathroom stalls, no more pre- and post-interview socials! WooHoo! Now hopefully I don't have to go through all of this crap again next year...
