For those of us who were fortunate enough to receive a positive email this morning, I have a question about match day at your school.

I'm still not completely sure how my school does it, but it seems that many have a ceremony in which you are handed an envelope and have the option of opening it in front of all your classmates and more. I know my wife will be the nervous one on Thursday (I was today), so am considering opening it in private, although once I get it I will not want to wait.

It kinda seems that deferring is a lame thing to do, but I can see both sides. What do you think? Would you open your envelope with all eyes on you?

PS - I will pre-emptively say that if someone else had posted this I might just tell them to nut up.

Remember that you have to live with your wife. Open it with her if she wants. At my school you can go up at any time and read it. So, make her happy and then go read it out loud.

i'm looking at mine on my own before on-stage. i don't like having emotional news given to me in front of a crowd. i'm not the type who would want a marriage proposal at a large sporting event or anything of that type.

they randomly mix up all our envelopes in a box and call our names randomly one by one to get the envelope. as we pick it up we drop $1 in a bucket and whoever has their name call last gets the $200+. then we all open simultaneously in our schools courtyard.

pansies

the whole lot of ya

grab that f-ing envelope, walk up to the mic, and read what it says.

does reading it in private change the fact that in a matter of hours/days everyone else in your school is going to know where you're going anyway?

go out like a man, or at least a very masculine woman

btw, i grabbed mine, walked up to the mic and said "If anyone wants a very nice condo with a view of the Sears Tower, I'm selling mine because I am moving to New York!"

My wife found out the same time everyone else did; just a great moment that would have been ruined by absolute wussiness

I think I'd rather respect my wife's wishes, as she has now made them clear.

md007, you must love picking fights; either that or you were born without the sense of humor gene.

life is full of surprises; if you want guarantees you can always talk to your little sister (i kid...i kid)

Soudes,

Please ignore md007. It only encourages his anti-social behavior. While he does thrive on picking fights, he also seems to be strangely obsessed with some ill-perceived notion that orthopods have some "bad rap" in medicine and society in general. He truly somehow believes we must all atone for our sins as a profession. I'm not sure why he believes everyone else in medicine hates us, but I find it to be a strange perception by someone who is pursuing orthopedics. I'm am starting to feel sorry for him. Just search on all his previous posts and you'll see what I mean. Match day should be a fun celebration regardless of your school tradition. Sounds like you made the most of it as the majority of normal people would choose to do. Congrats to all who matched.

unbelievable...but thanks for your sympathy earthdawg. let me know when you're mature enough to have a real debate and can comprehend sarcasm. Maybe then we'll revisit those other threads where you conveniently ignored the real questions I asked and began demonstrating your brilliant ability to take everything completely out of context.
