To Whom It May Concern:

I am pleased to announce a unique opportunity for graduating medical students to partake in a one-year orthopaedic surgery sports medicine fellowship in Staten Island, New York, NY. The Staten Island Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Arthroscopic Fellowship is an AANA-accredited sports medicine fellowship which has been in existence for almost 20 years. This coming academic year, July 2006-June 2007, we have not yet selected an orthopaedic sports medicine fellow, so we are opening up the application pool to include graduating medical students. Any graduating medical student who is not matched to a residency program for the coming year may apply. This is a great opportunity to learn cutting-edge operative surgical techniques and gain clinical and research experience in sports medicine. Many of my fellows have had great success in completing research projects that they eventually presented at national and regional conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. The position is a paid position with an annual salary of $60,000. In my 20 years of conducting this fellowship I have had the pleasure of having 2 fellows who had not yet matched to an orthopaedic surgery residency program. Both of these fellows matched to competitive orthopaedic surgery residency programs after completing their one year of fellowship training with me. If you are interested in applying for the Staten Island Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Arthroscopic Fellowship, please call my office manager, Anne, at 718-351-7241 or email me at [email protected]. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from many of you.

Sincerely,
Mark F. Sherman, MD

How can one do a fellowship without any residency training? Is this legitimate?

What do residents think of this proposal?

The fellowship may be a good opportunity for the unmatched especially if it has a track record for placing people into an ortho residency. On the other hand if the "fellow?" does not get a residency the year can not be applied for anything similar to a research year. My guess is that the PGY-1 fellow would function as a glorified PA.
