Anyone have any experience at Penn State? What is the program like and how is it to live in Hershey? I am expecially interested in the rumors and there is an international opportunity within the program. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Rotated there last year and HATED their program. Going into my away I thought that was the place I wanted to be b/c of family reasons and from what I had heard, it was SUPPOSEDLY a great program. This place is so academic it's ridiculous. They kicked out one of their chiefs last year b/c she was so pathetically incompetent in the OR. Seriously, they actually fired her halfway through her chief year. Their chiefs were still being walked through cases by the attendings. The chiefs had little autonomy in the OR. You NEVER operate as a 2. They are constantly double scrubbed. I watched a 3 struggle w/ skin closure on a simple spine case. It was pretty bad dude. The one positive is that if you want to do research, it's a great place to be. Also, the attendings are GREAT. All really nice guys and very easy to work with. Dr. Black (dept chair) is about as nice a guy you will find. Dr. Juliano (foot and ankle) is such a great guy. Their program director Dr. Segal is a peds orthopod and is a JACKASS!!! He is the only attending I didn't like. I actually saw him slam down a scapel in the OR. He is very juvenile w/ his yelling and his antics in the OR. I don't think he said 2 words to me the whole rotation. I asked him to help my determine cobb angles on his scoli pts and he was completely uninterested in helping me and totally blew me off. Safe to say, I was very disappointed in their program and it took me about one week to realize that their residents sucked in the or and that the program was too academic for me. Hope this helps.

Was not going to respond b/c my perspective may be outdated (I applied for residencies 4 years ago), but above post is so negative I had to chime in. When I was applying, I thought Penn state was an excellent program. Now things may have dramatically changed over the last 4 years, which is possible but unlikely to that degree. I spent a few days there for a "second look" after I interviewed and my take was that the program was well-rounded with all subspecialties covered. I ranked it very high on my list. I know a couple of their staff left for Maryland after former chairman Pelligrini went to Maryland. I don't know how much of an effect this has had on the program. At that time, it was one of the few programs I visited that that truly had EVERY subspecialty covered by at least 2 attendings, including tumor. Previous post makes some strong statements about resident capabilities in the OR which I would be careful about. "Incompetent" residents are scattered throughout the country and often it's a reflection on the resident and not necessarily the program.

In any case, my impression of PSU was exactly the opposite of that described above. I would spend some time there before you let above post influence you in any way. This forum is dangerous for this very reason. Strong opinions one way or the other are frequently misleading.
