ABCD1234--what does a phone call informing you of "ranked to match" mean? I think there are a lot of interpretations as to what this phrase means.

Apologies - that the applicant is in their top 5 and that a #1 ranking from the applicant's end would ensure a match.

Phone calls from Case Western went out yesterday as per a friend. Essentially saying you are ranked to match.

Did you get a phone call? Because I heard they were no longer going to send out anything and would not be calling anyone either.

Anyone willing to speculate how deep certain tiers usually go on their rank list to fill their class? Are "top tier" programs usually filling within a spots of their ranked to match group?

Thanks.

According to what I heard on the interview trail and at away rotations, it sounds like the top tier programs go between 1.5-2X the number of residency spots available to fill their programs. This information is coming from residents at these programs.
i.e. A program of 6 goes to about 9-12. A program of 8 goes to about 12-16.

Less competitive programs obviously go even deeper to fill their program. I was told by a low tier program in the Midwest (by the PD) that has 4 spots available that it will often go to the upper teens to low 20's to get their residents.

Anyone hear similar or different things?

That sounds pretty reasonable. The only exception I can think of is the program that wants you to say they are number 1 before they will consider ranking you to match.

With regards to the importance of the "ranked to match" calls/emails, do you think they call 12-16 people (assuming a class size of eight) or that they just call their top 8? Do you think it is generally a kiss of death from a program (eg Case or Utah) to not have received a call?

I'm betting they call MORE than the number of residency spots they have available. They can't assume everyone that they call will be ranking them #1. So, while it is still possible to match at a place that calls highly ranked applicants, the odds are probably tipped towards less likely.

So I guess this interpretation of "ranked to match" is a different interpretation than what abcd1234 mentioned earlier...meaning that just because you received a "ranked to match" phone call DOES NOT mean that you are guaranteed to match at that program, even if you ranked it #1? I guess this is what my question was earlier...is "ranked to match" meaning that if the program has say 4 positions, do they only call their top 4 people and say you are "ranked to match" or do they call 2X the number of people than they have residency positions, knowing that they typically need that number of people to fill their residency positions?

Let's say a program has 4 spots and normally goes to 12 applicants to get there. If you are ranked number 10 on the list this year, the program could call you and honestly say that based on previous years, you are "ranked to match". If this year they only go to number 9 to fill the 4 spots, you're SOL. They weren't lying when they said that you were ranked to match, but "ranked to match" is certainly not a guarantee. It sounds like Utah called the Top 5 applicants for 5 spots, so there it was a guarantee.

I'm guessing some programs only call the same number of applicants that they have positions. But I bet there are just as many programs that call more applicants than they have positions. We will never actually know which programs those are, unfortunately.

In case you missed it, here is the list of schools who have contacted applicants:

Utah
Rush
UMKC
HSS

I think applicants can still expect to hear from Pitt and Case. Others?

Looks like Mayo USED to contacts folks, not sure they do anymore (looking at last year's thread).
