Like the title says, I've got a dumb question, so please feel free to ignore:

I've been working on grip a lot, and am about 1-1.5cm away from closing a Captain of Crush #3 (if you don't know, but are curious, check out

Anyways, my hands are already big (biogel 8 1/2 orthos are already tight), and was wondering if it might eventually be a problem to have hands that are too big (i.e., difficulty in more delicate motor tasks). Curious about any input you guys might have.

Since most of your grip strength comes from your extrinsics up in your forearm I dont foresee your hands balooning up. They do make size 9 and above gloves in case you did not know or your hospital does not have them

Just out of curiosity, why are you so obsessed about grip strength?...

You joined this forum to say you like cereal? Nice

I wouldn't say I was obsessed. I used to powerlift, so hand strength was huge (hard to power clean 310+ w/o rocks for hands, deadlift for that matter, etc). I also was a thrower, so it was good to have strong wrists.

Since college and med school, not so much into the powerlifting, but I still like to work on grip. Kinda hard to bring a bench into class, but a gripper fits well into a pocket, and helps me focus (sometimes). Also, while it is awesome to have strong arms/back/legs/chest/etc, I think that the utility of stong distal arms/hands is the greatest. Think about how much you use them in construction, working on old trucks, opening jars, fixing sh1t in general. Plus, while I thought he could have always done better in the female department, Popeye was a childhood hero of mine.

The reason for asking this rather dumb question is that I have been noticing some changes, and thought I would double check to see if anyone thought this was bad. Like my hands are not as sensitive anymore (mostly from the callosus, though), and they are getting bigger. I have very little extension in my wrists (~ 60?, although I do stretch). While I don't think I am Lenny from Of Mice and Men, some rather, uhm epicine guys have not liked the handshake, while I was making a conscious effort to be gentle, . . . etc. If I was talking about my calves or neck, yeah this would be totally stupid. But the hand changes make me wonder whether I should tone it down. I know that there are size 9 gloves, but these are way too long, and problematic. I prefer them to loss of circulation, however.

So, I am still curious what you guys might have to say, excluding maybe breakfast preferences.

I tend to agree with bonedoc. Grip exercises shouldn't have much impact on the size of your intrinsic hand muscles (as far as I know). But if you're truly worried about it, I would say lay off the kung-fu grip workouts for a while and see if that helps. You certainly don't need the Captain Crush grip to go into orthopaedics (My grip strength, for example, is classified as slightly above "8-year-old girl").

Sensitivity may play a roll if you pursue a more delicate surgery type of practice like hand etc... Using smaller instruments, etc... They may be harder to manipulate if you sensitivity and proprioception are off.

I would stick to the 12 oz curls at the Airliner.

peanut butter cap'n crunch to be specific. you sound a little wound up, try not to squeeze too hard with that #3 grip when youre rubbing one out. i do know that you will need your jock if you go into ortho.

Stay away from the gripper, dude. That'll make your forearms bigger and this in turn will make your biceps look smaller. Same reason why I don't lift legs anymore. . . . .detracts from the upper body. "Curls for the girls," baby!!

Bonejock just stopped doing legs because he was embarassed that the girls from the jr high volleyball team were out squatting him....

just kidding

Seriously though, people do tend to lift what they enjoy the most, and thats usually what they are best at. We had a resident here (who tried to arm wrestle Bonejock at his interview, by the way) who only lifted arms and chest. He could out bench me by close to 175lbs but I could out squat him by 200. Why? he hates legs and I hate bench press b/c we suck at them compared to our stronger lifts.

"Tried to armwrestle Bonejock"? What happened? I would have loved to see that.

I have yet to see bigger arms on an Ortho resident.

It would've been a bad career move to arm wrestle a drunken resident at a post-interview holiday party. Basically, I pussed out because I actually liked the place (Kalamazoo). It would've been a different story if they were at the bottom of my list. And yes, I'm proud of the fact that I can bench press more than I can squat

If you want to work on your dexterity at the same time as grip, try corralling a purple crested blue snake with a fist full of aloe vera mixed with a hint of pineapple juice (for aroma) while hopped up on half a bottle of nyquil and two ambien.
That'll put hair on your chest.

I am in my 22nd year as a practicing and teaching Orthopaedic surgeon. I have directly taught over 160 Orthopaedic residents. The residents with the highest grip strength always seemed to have the best dexterity.

If I were forced to invent a rationale for this unexpected finding, I would say that having the greatest number of motor units correlates with great strength, and having a great number of motor units allows finer modulation of the amount of force applied.
