Hey guys... I'm just finishing my second year, and I just found out I'm gonna be traveling to the California area this summer. I'd like to check out a few of the cali ortho programs while I'm there. Problem is that when I called UCSD, the secretary gave me some story about medical student "shadowing" being illegal according to HIPAA. Anyhow, If anyone is a doc, resident, or med student in the area, and knows someone I can contact who could help get me past the BS, please let me know, either on here, or saubz2001 @ hotmail dot com. Thanks in advance!

It is not "illegal" but many programs are no longer willing to do this due to the increased paperwork, etc... that is required.

Just as a suggestion, you might consider trying to swing something in the ortho research depts in the places you are intersted in (avoid HIPAA). I frankly don't know anything about those programs, but, often the research dept is physically located in the same space as the rest of the department.

If you took this route, you could at minimum check out the research departments (even if it's not your bag), probably attend conferences, talk to residents, and of course get some face time.

Just a thought.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice so far... but I only have about a week to work with. I'd really like to get out of my home state for at least one fourth year elective, but I don't want to just randomly pick some places and apply. I was hoping to just get a chance to meet some of the residents, and see the hospitals. I realize I'm hoping for something big here, but my plea continues!!
