Figured I'd bump this up from last year.

Obviously, I want to do a 6-year program. Why did I rank the way I did? US news rankings mean little to me. What matter to me are location, training, and academics. Here's an academics example: if you go to harvard, you have very little time to accomplish anything and your academic credentials hang solely on the "H." I want to get a few pubs during residency and the CA 6-year programs allow just that.

Let's not get crazy, ContinualStiffy. If we can't ask people for explanations about their lists or question how people ranked them, then this whole thread would be useless. Sounds to me like RoobyRoobyRoo was just curious because his perceptions of a couple places were different. He even complemented him on how impressive the list was.

If anyone has any questions about my list, feel free to ask. I think that's the purpose of this forum.

Geography was my biggest concern, but program quality certainly affected the order too.

1. UC Davis - Rotated here. Awesome faculty and residents. Very well rounded, despite busy trauma team. Sac is an awesome town for families, and not as bad for singles as many have implied.

2. OHSU - Rotated here. Great faculty and residents. Very well rounded. Dr. Yoo is ambitiously increasing research and likely overall reputation.

3. UNC - Extremely impressed by Dr. Dirschl, the faculty, and the residents- very fun-loving, hard working group. I would have never ranked this high before the interview. I think this is one of the top 10-20 programs in the country. Cool college town, very affordable.

4. Univ of Wisc. Same as UNC.

5. USC - Awesome group of residents. Way too trauma heavy (21 months), and therefore light on the other specialties. Still a great training experience. If you can handle the congestion and high cost of living, LA is an awesome place with everything to do.

6. GWU - Heavy operative experience, but otherwise didn't get a great feel for the place. Seemed pretty well rounded. Great residents, and at least decent faculty. I have family nearby. DC is a cool city.

7. Temple - Ranked higher than originally anticipating. Strong trauma experience. Hospital is in the worst ghetto I've ever seen, but the residents live in decent surrounding suburbs.

8. St. Lukes - In Manhattan (there's everything to do, but expensive as hell). Weak trauma, so farmed to Delaware for 4 months.

9. Albert Einstein - Very impressed with faculty, residents, and overall educational experience. Living/working in the Bronx sucks.

10. New York Medical College - Trauma heavy, but good specialty experience. No residents with families, likely due to the fact that half the time is spent in Valhalla and half in South Manhattan- an hour commute. No matter where you live, you'll be driving a lot.

11. SUNY Downstate - Didn't get a great feel for the place. Nobody had great things to say about it, not even the residents. Living/working in Brooklyn sucks.

Good luck everyone, I know I need it.

Hey, ya'll...

I applied to 40-something programs, offered 21, went on 13. I am obviously biased regionally so that will be reflected in my preferences.

1. John Peter Smith--great program, great location, operate early and often, what it lacks in name, it makes up for in these areas.

2. UT-Southwestern--great program, great location, a little trauma heavy

3. UT-HSC San Antonio--liked the area and the residents a lot, Carlisle is awesome; appear to operate quite a bit

4. UT-Houston--location is okay, but I prefer D/FW and S.A. more. Program seems really strong.

5. Baylor-- Same as UT-Houston. Probably gonna' be a "top" program after this probation thing settles.

6. U of Arizona--Nice hospital and early operative experience.

7. Yale--very acedemic feeling. Beautiful hospital, nice residents. I'm not looking for an academic career, though and I feel that to put this No. 1, that's what you're taking advantage of.

8. UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson--Great program with really laid back residents. Early operative experience. Not the biggest fan of location, otherwise would have ranked it much higher.

9. Georgetown--very nice program; no wonder so many students from the med school go into it. High cost of living.

10. UK-Lexington-- seems like nice group of guys. Good arthroscopic experience as per their PD.

11. UC-Irvine--(offered several Cali schools, but only went on this one) Very high cost of living, no family nearby. To be honest, the program seemed quite strong, but one of the interviewing rooms was so malignant that I left with a bad taste.

12. NYU-HJD--Great group of guys, like most of these. Take 10 a year (12 if you count 6yr). Zuckerman appears to get awesome fellowships for anyone wanting them in just about any subspecialty. Again, location just played a factor here and I'm not sure NYC is where/or the way I want to live for the next 5 yrs.

13. St. Joseph's--Very small program (2/year). No family nearby. Decent operative exposure as per residents, but hospital is in ghetto. Again, all this comes down to personal preference.

Ultimately, I'll echo what everybody has heard on this forum: this is all about personal choice. There will be individuals here who create their ROL soley based upon name rather than on what lifestyle/location/operative experience they will get. Names are great--an added plus if it is associated with the residency in particular that you're interested in. However, if you feel you won't learn as much operatively, or are less happy (I feel you are more successful when you enjoy what you do) at a program with a "gorgeous" name--you're sacrificing 5 years of your life that could be fantastic while still becoming that great orthopod that you want to eventually become. My 2 cents.

Let me preface this by saying that asking a guy to justify his list is like asking him to justify his wife/gf. This was the hardest thing I have ever had to do. I think you pick places based on gut feeling and what seems to click with you. That being said, I dont think it is right to question why people make a list the way they do....its your life and what is important to you may not make a rats ass bit of difference to the next guy.....so here goes.....

1. Penn State -- well rounded program with strong trauma. Great research possibilities in trauma. Hershey was tough to swallow but I think the faculty here are very deep.

2. University of Kansas (KC) -- solid program, stable. VA. Seemed like KC would be a good affordable city for a resident.

3. St Louis University -- Awesome trauma. St. Louis is a nice city and Moed is building this place up by the day. Would have been No. 1 if not for the 6th year.

4. SUMMA -- awesome community program, with great operative experience.

5. Baylor -- Awesome trauma with great autonomy. Seemed like still rebuiding...look for this place to be a real powerhouse in a few years.

6. Akron General -- SUMMA's twin brother....

7. Ohio State -- Columbus is better than one would think. Searching for a new chair.

8. Nebraska/Creighton -- Solid.

9. Indiana U. -- the 3 peds guys quit. They have 4 hospitals which is cool.
Great if you wanted to do hand.

10. SIU....great residents....I like trauma and one of the residents even told me this program is great except for a guy who wants to do trauma. So dont let this be a barometer of the program....this would be an awesome place for the right guy.

11. Syracuse (SUNY -Upstate)...all about location and cold. This would have been higher.

12. Ohio state 6 year -- do I have to explain.

ankylosing, i like ur top 4, but i was wondering why baylor below jps, mcw, and hamot above GW, UIC temple?!! i assuming location did not play much of a role. Its still an awesome list and to be honest, way way better than mine.

Well, I applied to 53 schools, got 14 interviews, went on 11, ranked all 11. At first I thought I would rank around prestige of the program, but when it came down to it location won out.

1. UCLA- Great program, family lives close

2. Miami- Best location and great program

3. UCI- See UCLA

4. Stanford - Def exceeded my expectations. If it was hotter in Palo Alto

5. UCDavis 5 year - Probably the best program in Cali (didn't interview at UCSF)

6. USC - To much trauma, but best training of any school I interviewed at

7. UCDavis 6 Year - See UCDavis

8. Baylor - Program seems to be improving and will be really really good soon.

9. UTSW- Really liked Dallas and was a great program.

10. St. Lukes- Great location

11. Loma Linda - Surprised me in that they seem to be a good program. Great place for married people (I'm single)

12 + 13. Pitt 5 year then 6 year - Best program I interviewed at. Freddy Fu is amazing and if I was married this would be number 1.
