Infection with Zika virus during pregnancy may be linked to a birth defect called arthrogryposis, characterized by joint deformities, say researchers.

Zika is a virus most commonly spread through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes.

The virus does not always present symptoms, but when it does, symptoms may include fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis, headache, and muscle pain.

Most grade school students are likely to claim recess as their favorite period of the day; however, in many cases recess still can be sedentary with students not engaging in enough physical activity. Now researchers from the University of Missouri have found that zones with specific games can improve physical activity, improving a child's chance of engaging in the recommended 60 minutes of "play per day," an effort endorsed by many health organizations as well as the National Football League.

"Research has proven that active children are healthy children," said Jill Barnas, a doctoral student in the department of nutrition and exercise physiology at MU.

New research published online in The FASEB Journal, describes a protein created by the body's "biological clock" that actively represses inflammatory pathways within the affected limbs during the night. This protein, called cryptochrome, has proven anti-inflammatory effects in cultured cells and presents new opportunities for the development of drugs that may be used to treat inflammatory diseases and conditions, such as arthritis.

"By understanding how the biological clock regulates inflammation, we can begin to develop new treatments, which might exploit this knowledge," said Julie Gibbs, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work and arthritis research UK career development fellow at the Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Institute of Human Development at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.

In a study published online by JAMA Ophthalmology, Paul D. Loprinzi, Ph.D., of the University of Mississippi, University, Miss., evaluated the association of sedentary behavior (SB) with diabetic retinopathy (DR) using data from the 2005 to 2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Sedentary behavior was assessed with an accelerometer, and measured during waking hours in participants with 4 or more days of at least 10 h/d of accelerometer wear time. Activity counts of less than 100/min were used to define SB; activity counts of 100/min or greater were classified as total physical activity (PA).
